type='text'>New Dodge Challenger

The 70's muscle car race on again in 2005?
Earlier this year Dodge brought back the
Charger and now has the new dodge challenger

scheduled for production.

The new two door Challenger will be available
with an optional v8 Hemi engine and is said to
be in direct copetition with the new Mustang.

Ready in 2009, and an expected 70,000 to be sold.

The original Challenger built in 1970-1974 was
the black sheep of the muscle car industry and came
in too late to make a huge dent in the market.
The originals are now collector's The sport coupe is seen as a competitor to the Mustang. The new Mustang has turned around how the coupe market is viewed by manufacturers, and it has exceeded all sales expectations. It's not like all Dodge's short-lived rear-drive E-bodies didn't have the same potential, but this is one Challenger we know is capable of giving any other g-Machine a run for its money. With rear-wheel horsepower figures at 650hp and 708 ft-lbs., and more coming, you can see why it's truly a contender regardless of where the competition calls.

Obviously, power was a paramount concern in this buildup, so the 440-based RB block is worthy of further review. The block received an overbore prior to the addition of a 4.15-inch stroke crankshaft from Eagle. The crank was matched to Eagle 6.76-inch long H-beam connecting rods and the total displacement now checks in at an even 500 cubes. Custom Ross pistons hang on the ends of the long rods, and provide 9.2:1 compression when teamed with the combustion chambers in the well-worked Edelbrock aluminum heads. A Comp Cams hydraulic roller, pushing 230/242-degrees on the intake/exhaust respectively, tickles the valves. Lift numbers are .530- and .542-inch, respectively. Lifters are from Crane, pushrods are by Smith Bros., and the 1.6:1 rockers are from Speed Pro. All these great parts would work just fine on their own, but Stephen had other plans. The mechanical sculpture that used to be a 440 is now reliant on an ATI ProCharger D1SC supercharger for 9lbs. of boosted glory. An intercooler measuring 18x24 chills the boosted incoming charge on its wild ride to the intake manifold. An Edelbrock Performer RPM intake was plumbed for injectors and fitted with an 1,130 cfm throttle body to accept the boosted charge. ACCEL's DFI software urges the EFI to greater heights, and the fully-programmable setup has been fine-tuned to make the most of the huffed 500-incher.

With power concerns put completely to rest, decisions had to be made on the best-possible means of putting this power to the ground. A Keisler custom aluminum bellhousing is full of McLeod clutch and pressure plate products, feeding into the Keisler TKO-600 5-speed manual trans. The transmission has also been fitted with a traditional Mopar pistol grip shifter, of course.
Keisler also supplied the custom-length driveshaft, which leads back to the Dana 60 rear axle. Loaded with a 3.54:1 gearset and a fresh Sure-Grip unit, it's ready to take all the power the huffed 500-incher can send its way. Supported by Mopar Performance HD leaf springs, KYB shocks, a one-inch diameter anti-sway bar, and an adjustable pinion snubber, the aft chassis remains unmodified in its current form. The bolt-on upgrades have proven sufficient, so far.

The front suspension has received copious bolt-on upgrades as well. Another set of HD torsion bars supports the big-block, with another pair of KYB shocks and a 1.2-inch diameter anti-sway bar in place. Braking capabilities are enhanced with Baer Racing 13-inch rotors and twin-piston calipers. A matching master cylinder from Baer ensures stopping prowess is maximized, as another pair of Baer Racing rotors (this time in 12-inch diameter) also lives on each end of the Dana 60.

Nailing the stance is a job for 17x9 (front) and 18x10 (rear) American Racing wheels wearing 245/45-17 and 295/45-18-inch Nitto 555 road racy rubber. The 20:1 quick-ratio steering box (from Firm Feel) aims the sticky rubber wherever Stephen wants to stretch out the car's legs. So, where does one pilot such a car? Anywhere, according to Durr.

"What I'm actually impressed by is the car's streetability. The engine idles rock steady at 700 rpm, starts instantly in any weather, gets 16 mpg on the highway, and the coolant temps don't push past 180 degrees (thanks to a BeCool aluminum radiator, dual Spal electric fans, and a high-flow water pump). This is no trailer queen or race-only ride. It's capable of being driven to work daily or across the country (as was accomplished on the Hot Rod Power Tour). No problemo. Can you say 'streetable'?"

Yes, Stephen, we can. And for you, we have. We're confident Stephen's Challenger is up to it's namesake, and we appreciate how this has been done without losing the flavor of the classic Mopar musclecar. Plum Crazy paint? Check. Pistol Grip shifter? Check. Stock hood and road-racy stance? Check. Now that you love it, let's review those power numbers once again--650 rear-wheel horsepower, and over 700 ft.-lbs. of torque. Did we mention the nitrous? What's up with that, Stephen?

"I should be looking at over 900hp and 1,000 ft.-lbs. at the flywheel once I get the nitrous system dialed in..."

We can't wait. What about our readers? Are you still up for this Challenge?

Dodge Challenger Articles and Information
Originally Posted on 6/12/2005 4:29:04 PM

1970 Dodge Challenger SE RT V8 Contact Sales Dept. My yellow and black Challenger.
The year was 1974 and I was 17 years old with a taste for adventure and
anything that looked like it would go fast.
At that tender age I was flying solo in a Cessna 172 with the ADF tuned into
the local radio station listening to CCR crank out Suzie Cue in time with
the propeller. Nobody was going to tell me, I didn't have the world by the butt.

As we were walking by the showroom and spotted the beauty, I told Joe the friend that was with me "that's my car".

Two days later I had my Dad talked into co-signing a loan for me and the fun started. My girlfriend hated it because she was afraid I was going to pick up
the odd extra girl that wanted a ride.
She hated it so I loved it even more.

Now the 74 Challenger was not necessarily a muscle car with a 318 3 speed on
the floor but I didn't see it that way and pushed it to every limit I could find.
It just seemed to "stick" right to the pavement. Pavement yes but gravel?
No.
One afternoon I found it's limit and looking back at how crazy I was, I'm
surprised I didn't find it sooner.
We were at a friend's house, I was one month away from age 18 and we were
indulging in a cocktail or two.
I know, drinking and driving don't mix. This was 1974 remember.

Anyway, it was time to go for a ride. With me was my older brother Greg in the
passenger's side and my buddy Ed in the back seat.
Left turn off of the main street onto the highway and a green light.

What's this in front of me? A slow going half ton with a camper on top?
Well, why wait to pass on the left, why not just pass on the right in the
gravel? Ya, that sounds like something this Challenger should be able to do
and besides, I don't think too many guys have tried this before.

A crank to hard right and drop her down into second, hammer down.
Hey this isn't bad, hope I didn't spray the truck with rocks.
We're past him and I see the blacktop to the left calling me.
I'll just crank it hard left, get back on and we'll be on our way.

Oops, there's something I wasn't expecting, we're fish-tailing like we're testing
rudders. Ed later informed me that I was trying wildly to straighten it out
and about the fourth swerve over we went.
It was like eveything just went into slow motion.
I can still recall the sound. It was a slow motion crunch, crunch, crunch.
Everything seemed black.

When we came to rest on the roof, I called out, Greg you ok...yep, Ed you ok..
yep. Everyone was alive. You don't know how many times I've counted my lucky
stars over the years that nobody was seriously hurt, or worse yet, killed.

It was a good car my Dodge Challenger. Even though the passenger's side
was crushed right down to the door none of the doors opened and nobody
was thrown out. None of us had our seat belts on either.

There probably wasn't a square foot on the car that didn't have a dent and the
roof was flat so it was a total write-off. But nobody was hurt. I had a sore knee
from the steering wheel, Ed had skinned knuckles from putting his fists tight
against the roof when he realized we were going to roll and Greg had a lense
missing out of his glasses. We rolled 4 times.

There was a Police officer right in front coming towards us and he
opened the door to get us out. He said if he'd have been a couple of
seconds sooner we'd have smashed right into him so it seems that we rolled a
couple of times right down the middle of the road and then off to the right
hand ditch. I estimate we were doing about 80 miles an hour at the time
of the roll.

We were lucky. I owe that Challenger something because I had pushed it beyond
what it was designed to take and in the end, it came through for us and created
a safe place to flop around in like rag dolls.

One of my greatest ambitions is to restore a 1974 Dodge Challenger
and drive down the exact route with my brother and Ed and be given a
second chance. It would be like going back in time and for me it would "full
circle" the Challenger.
I'm off to find one. Hope you find yours.

Mark Saville

Dodge Challenger Articles and Information
Originally Posted on 6/9/2005 5:41:48 PM

This Week In Auto Racing June 2 - June 5 (WFTV 9 Orlando)

This Week in Auto Racing June 2 - June 5 more...

Dodge Challenger Articles and Information
Originally Posted on 6/8/2005 9:15:34 PMContent source: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/search/dodge+challenger/SIG=1269ro7pi/*http%3A//www.wftv.com/sports/4550873/detail.html?rss=orlc&psp=sports

Pace cars roll away with Indy champions (The Indianapolis Star)

Al Unser Sr. still owns three of the four pace cars he was awarded for winning the Indianapolis 500.
